Generative Engine Optimization: getting cited by ChatGPT and Gemini

Being on page one is no longer the same as being the answer. Here is what changes, and what to do about it.

A growing share of commercial questions in the Gulf now get answered before anyone visits a website. The user asks an assistant, the assistant summarises three or four sources, and the click never happens. If your brand is not one of those sources, you are invisible in that transaction.

What generative engines actually reward

Large language models and AI search products do not rank pages the way a classic search engine does. They retrieve passages, weigh how confidently a claim is supported, and prefer sources that are unambiguous, current and corroborated elsewhere. In practice that means three things.

  • Extractable structure. Clear headings, short declarative answers near the top of a section, tables for comparisons, and schema markup that states plainly what a page is about.
  • Corroboration. A claim repeated on your site, your Google Business Profile, your LinkedIn and a third-party publication is far more likely to be surfaced than one that exists once.
  • Freshness with provenance. Dated content with a visible author and a real organisation behind it beats an undated page every time.

What this means for a UAE business

The Gulf makes this sharper than most markets. Queries are frequently bilingual, brand names get transliterated inconsistently, and a large share of commercial intent runs through Maps and WhatsApp rather than a browser. An entity that is described identically in English and Arabic, with a consistent name, address and phone number everywhere, is dramatically easier for a model to resolve confidently.

Ranking is about a page. Generative visibility is about an entity. The work shifts from optimising documents to making your organisation unambiguous.

A practical starting checklist

  1. Publish a clear, factual "about" page with your legal entity, offices, founding, and services listed plainly.
  2. Add Organization, LocalBusiness and Service schema — and make sure the values match your Google Business Profile exactly.
  3. Rewrite the top of every service page so the first two sentences answer "what is this and who is it for".
  4. Build a genuine FAQ from the questions your sales team actually gets asked, with direct answers.
  5. Earn a handful of citations from Gulf-relevant publications. Volume matters far less than relevance.
  6. Track it. Ask the assistants the questions your buyers ask and record whether you appear.

How to measure it

There is no Search Console for AI answers yet, so measurement is manual and comparative. We keep a fixed prompt set per client — the twenty questions a buyer would realistically ask — and run them monthly across the major assistants, logging whether the brand appears, in what position, and whether the description is accurate. Accuracy matters as much as presence: being cited with the wrong service list is worse than not being cited.
